It’s an early-season NFC West showdown as the Arizona Cardinals welcome the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday afternoon. Both squads are looking to bounce back after dropping close road games by just six points in Week 1.
Kyler Murray and the Cardinals nearly pulled off a stunning upset against the Buffalo Bills but ultimately fell short in a 34-28 thriller. Now, they're gearing up to take on the Rams, who also sit at 0-1 following a 26-20 overtime heartbreaker against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football.
The Rams took a blow with the loss of Puka Nacua, leaving their offense in a tough position heading into Week 2. However, history favors Los Angeles, as they've won 13 of the last 15 meetings with Arizona, including last season’s dominant victories of 26-9 and 37-14.

This early season division game feels important. The Rams and Cardinals each opened the season with a loss, while the two other teams in the NFC West, the 49ers and Seahawks, are off to 1-0 starts. The loser of this game will find itself already falling out of the race for the division title.
The Rams will be without wideout Puka Nacua, who suffered a knee injury in the team's first game. His absence means Matthew Stafford will look to Cooper Kupp with even greater frequency. And I believe I speak for all fantasy owners of Marvin Harrison Jr. when I plead with Cardinals QB Kyler Murray to look toward his rookie receiver more than the three times he did last week and complete more than one pass to him against the Rams.
The Rams were perhaps good enough to win, but fell to the Detroit Lions, 26-20 in overtime, to open the 2024 season at 0-1. LA quarterback Matthew Stafford was productive through the air with 317 yards and a touchdown, and he forged a strong connection early with wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who finished with 14 grabs for 110 yards and a score.
Detroit tied the game with 17 seconds left on a Jake Bates field goal and won it with an 8-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 1-yard TD by David Montgomery.
After a 2023 season full of struggles, the Cardinals walked out of a 34-28 road loss to the Buffalo Bills with at least a little optimism. The Bills came back from 17-3 down to get on the board with a win, but with Kyler Murray’s dual threat skills back at the heart of Arizona’s offense. The Cardinals signal-caller completed 21 of 31 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown and rushed five times for a team-high 57 yards.
Today, the Arizona Cardinals will host the Los Angeles Rams at the State Farm Stadium. Both teams lost their opening games in Week 1, so this NFL Week 2 matchup is as much about recovering from a rocky start as it is about the decades-long rivalry.
This is the first matchup between the longstanding rivals in the 2024 regular season. Los Angeles has had the upper hand over Arizona since 2017. Of the last 15 games the rivals have played against each other, the Rams are up 13-2. But a slew of injuries has left the team with a thin offensive line, which could be the opening Arizona needs to start closing that gap.
The outlook for the Cardinals is rosier than it was a year ago under second-year head coach Jonathan Gannon, as the return of quarterback Kyler Murray from a torn ACL suffered late in the 2022 season offers the Cardinals a chance to once again play to their potential on offense -- as does the addition of wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the No. 4-overall pick in the 2024 Draft.
Meanwhile, the Rams continue their post-Super Bowl LVI transition, as the retirement of legendary defensive tackle Aaron Donald has formally signaled a youth movement on Los Angeles' defense. On thr other side of the ball, the team continues to be led by veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, who was as effective as ever with a 317-yard passing performance against the Lions.
Los Angeles has owned this series as of late, winning eight of the last 10 games against Arizona, a streak which included a season sweep of their NFC West opponent a season ago. The last time the two teams faced off, Rams running back Kyren Williams bludgeoned the Cardinals with a performance that included 143 rushing yards (8.9 yards per carry) as well as 61 receiving yards.
Rams WR Puka Nacua was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after aggravating a knee injury he sustained in training camp and will miss at least the next four games. LG Steve Avila (sprained MCL) and swing tackle Joe Noteboom (high ankle sprain) have also been placed on IR, and RG Kevin Dotson (ankle) is day to day. ... Cardinals RT Jonah Williams (knee) was placed on IR Wednesday because of an injury suffered in the opener. CB Max Melton is in concussion protocol. DL Darius Robinson (calf) was placed on IR before the season started and must miss at least three more games.
McVay has dominated the Cardinals, posting a 13-2 record since becoming the Rams head coach in 2017. That includes a 34-11 NFC wild-card playoff win in January 2022 en route to a Super Bowl victory. The Rams have a nine-game winning streak against the Cardinals in State Farm Stadium.
