Before going any further, a word on the man of the moment, Russell Wilson. He practiced in midweek, having sat out the 18-10 opening win over the Falcons, but while Mike Tomlin clearly has faith in him, he's probably best served sitting him out regardless because the way he stunk out Empower Field at Mile High last season, the Broncos faithful would like nothing better than to tear their former quarterback to shreds.

Justin Fields struggled on his full Steelers debut but was rescued by kicker Chris Boswell, who scored six field goals, including a trio of 50+ yarders. Watt will likely be at the heart of the real entertainment, as he's unleashed upon rookie quarterback Bo Nix. The No.12 pick threw two interceptions as he struggled to get anything going, but was very nearly bailed out by the Broncos' fearsome defensive unit.

Justin Fields could be back under center for the Steelers in Week 2 with veteran Russell Wilson going into Sunday listed as questionable with a calf injury. Fields got the start on the road against the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday and helped the Steelers to an 18-10 win with his 17-of-23 passing for 156 yards and his 14 rush attempts for 57 yards.

Pittsburgh should be very competitive in the head-to-head battle of starting quarterbacks if the same version of Nix shows up in his second career start. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft completed 26 of 42 pass attempts for 138 yards in Denver’s 26-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday.

A couple of of longstanding AFC franchises meet up in the Mile High City on Sunday afternoon, as the Denver Broncos look for a better performance when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers had to deal with changing their starting quarterback leading to the kickoff of the 2024 season. With Russell Wilson suffering a calf injury, in stepped former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. There was nothing flashy about Fields against the Atlanta Falcons, but the offense was good enough to get in position for Chris Boswell to kick six field goals, leading to an 18-10 win. Pittsburgh‘s defense was also a key story in the victory, as they held the Falcons to just 226 yards of total offense, including picking off a pair of passes from Kirk Cousins.

Denver did its best to keep things close on the road to start the new year. With rookie quarterback Bo Nix at the helm, the Broncos saw some noticeable growing pains last Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. The former Oregon product threw a pair of interceptions, but did rush for a touchdown in his NFL debut. In all, Denver’s offense has some work to do after just 231 yards against Seattle. The defense certainly had its moments, forcing a pair of safetys and causing two turnovers in the 26-20 loss.

The Steelers used their swarming defense to limit the Falcons to 10 points to open the season with a win. Justin Fields led Pittsburgh to 18 points and could start again this week with starter Russell Wilson still sidelined with a calf injury. Rookie Bo Nix will get his second start (and his first at home) for the Broncos, who lost an early lead against the Seahawks to start the year 0-1.

This game will feature two compelling matchups in the passing game. Steelers wideout George Pickens will likely be matched up against Broncos Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II. When Denver has the ball, veteran wideout Courtland Sutton will try to win his one-on-one matchups with Pittsburgh's second-year cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Rest assured that both of those matchups will have some impact on the outcome of Sunday's game.

I'm taking the Steelers, but proceed with caution if you choose to do so, too. Pittsburgh historically hasn't fared well in Denver, and Bo Nix, while being a rookie, should be sharper than Atlanta QB Kirk Cousins was last week as Nix played extensively during the preseason.

I can definitely see a scenario where Denver wins (especially if the defense can bait Justin Fields into some turnovers), but I'm gong with the Steelers largely based off of Mike Tomlin's track record against rookie quarterbacks (24-6) and Pittsburgh's likely ability to run the ball against a Denver defense that gave up 146 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in Seattle. This could lead to a big game for Steelers running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

I'm also banking on Fields having another solid day in relief of injured teammate Russell Wilson. Last week, Fields made several timely throws and did not commit any turnovers. The Steelers will win if he has a similar performance on Sunday.
